Gospel Announcer of The Year
Darryll King

19th Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards

George R. Brown Convention Center, Houston Texas

Born in Memphis, Tennessee, this woman of God was blessed with the gift to communicate. No matter how she did it, she found a way to communicate to the masses.

Darryll King is the middle child of Ozzie and Ernestine Smith; as a child she dreamed of becoming an award-winning news anhcorwoman… of becoming a well-known actress. At the age of three Darryll was already performing live poetry to audiences and congregations, starring in leading roles at church and at school.

Darryll King attended Fisk University, but went on to graduate magna cum laude from University of Memphis. While in college, Darryll toured with Roots Rhymes & Righteous Times as an orator and singer. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Communications and English, as well as having worked toward a Masters in Public relations. Today, she holds an honorary Doctorate from GMOR Theological University.

Darryll King's professional career started back in Memphis at WHBQ News Talk radio. Then it was on to WLOK and Magic 101FM. This soulful lady even appeared as host on "Good Morning Memphis" on NBC. But October of 1989 is when hit big time Chicago. She was a morning show host on WVAZ, better known as V103. She was the morning personality on WJPC and Darryll even worked as an assistant producer for "The Geraldo Riveria Show." She was a Saturday morning per-diem host on WBEE and Sunday morning host on Powerhouse sister station Power 92. But after all that, she is now working for the King! She is the only African-American female to single-handedly host an FM drive-time Gospel music format in the third largest market for radio.

With over 16 years experience, she is witty, intelligent, down to earth, and a whole bunch of fun! Staying spiritually rooted, Darryll is a member of Covenant United of Christ under the direction of her brother, Rev. Dr. Ozzie Smith. Darryll King is also proud to be the wife of Earl King, Sr. and mother of Earl King II.

As local sales manager, Darryll King is the most aggressive account executive employed at Rejoice 102.3FM. But her real love and passion shines bright through her daily inspirational music format, "The King's Highway." She ministers to the entire family Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

You can catch Darryll King on CBS-TV Saturday mornings as the host of "Different Drummers" and on "The Cutting Edge with Darryll" cable program. Regardless of format… Darryll picks you up with encouragement, inspiration, and scripture.
